Program status — August 2026
title: "Program status — August 2026"
date: "2026-08-11"
Project AETHER is in pre-hardware: concept work, public documentation, and open collaboration infrastructure.
Current posture
- Next engineering milestone: acid-resistant material coupons + small helium ground float with basic telemetry.
- Funding: ~$500k public target framed as ground demonstrator / early R&D — not full flight cost.
- Launch: no committed date; flight-class windows only after ground gates and capital.
- Collaboration: L1–L3 contribution via GitHub and the site volunteer form. AETHER OS runs daily briefs and task prioritization.
Where to look
- /status — built vs not yet
- /aether-os — mission OS
- Repo docs: CONOPS, materials protocol, regulatory notes
Long-term vision (cloud-layer science → habitation tech) stays the north star. Near-term work is prove float and materials on Earth.

AETHER OS online — August 2026
title: "AETHER OS online — August 2026"
date: "2026-08-11"
Project AETHER is now running on AETHER OS: an AI-coordinated, adaptive operating system that keeps the mission moving with daily briefs, prioritized tasks, and public contribution loops — without a traditional hierarchy.
What changed
- Daily Mission Loop is live: DETECT → PLAN → EXECUTE → VERIFY. Briefs land in the repo (
aether-os/briefs/) with claimable work and acceptance criteria.
- Collaborators and contributors welcome at every skill level:
- L1 — content, social, ideas, simple graphics
- L2 — code, simulations, technical writing, design
- L3 — hardware, regulatory, deep engineering (review gated)
- New team members can claim tasks via GitHub Issues (
claiming) or the site volunteer form. Verified work is attributed in the contribution log.
- Public OS overview: /aether-os · architecture in the repo · build-in-public by design.
How to join
- Read the latest Mission Brief and CONTRIBUTING.
- Claim an L1 or L2 issue — or propose one.
- Ship evidence (PR, notes, assets). We verify and log it.
Founder role remains Founder Emeritus / Strategic Oversight — vision and high-stakes overrides stay human; day-to-day coordination is largely automated.
Not for consumption. For continuation. Venus cloud layer remains the target. Launch window 2030s.

Competitor missions update — July 2026

Recent developments in Venus cloud exploration:
-
Rocket Lab Venus Life Finder: Private mission planning 2026 launch. Focused on autofluorescence nephelometer to detect organic compounds in clouds at ~50km altitude. Single instrument descent probe.
-
NASA Aerobot concepts: Super-pressure variable altitude balloon cycling 48-60km. 30+ day missions for habitability characterization. Proposed for ~2026-2028 windows.
-
ESA Venus Entry Probe (VEP): Aerobot + orbiter for middle cloud layer analysis. Historical concept with modern relevance.
These missions validate the scientific interest in the cloud layer and de-risk aspects of AETHER's approach. AETHER remains unique in targeting long-duration float with broad payload.
Sources synthesized from public mission proposals and recent announcements.
